Ian Green of Greentrax Memorial Trophy

This year, on the 12th August 2026, the Gordon Duncan Memorial Trust presented a new trophy for the first time. This trophy is in memorium and respect for all Ian Green did for the Gordon Duncan Memorial Trust as one of the original Trustees until illness caused Ian to step down reluctantly. Ian was the initial Treasurer of the GDMT from 2008 until 2011 and was one of the central group of Trustees until he resigned in 2022.

Ian was a great supporter of Scottish traditional music in all its forms. He was a special support to Gordon Duncan including supporting Gordon to record his 3 albums, ‘Just for Seamus’, ‘The Circular Breath’ and ‘Thunderstruck’. Gordon said “thank you” by composing the great tune “Ian Green of Greentrax”.

The Trust decided it would be appropriate for the Trust to award this trophy for a special musical performance each year in memory of Ian Green. It would be awarded at the Gordon Duncan Memorial Solo Piping Competition which we hold annually.

This unique trophy contains a special brooch with the written score of ‘Ian Green of Greentrax’ inscribed on it.

The first presentation of the ‘Ian Green of Greentrax Memorial Trophy’ was made on Wednesday 12th August 2026, by Ian Duncan, Chair of the Gordon Duncan Memorial Trust, to the Strathmore Schools Pipe Band.

The Strathmore Schools Pipe Band is made up of young players from several small feeder Primary schools in Perthshire and centralised at Blairgowrie High School for their band practices. The Strathmore Schools Pipe Band along with other members of the music department, who enjoy playing Scottish traditional music, worked together to compete at the Scottish Schools Pipes and Drums Trust (SSPDT) ‘Freestyle Competition’ at the SSPDT Championships in Kilmarnock early this year, and against very strong competitors the Strathmore Schools won. Their musical performance was innovative, well-constructed, well played and enjoyed by both the audience and the performers.

The Ian Green of Greentrax Memorial Trophy was presented to the two leaders of the group Brian Sinclair and Liam Manion by Ian Duncan, Chair of the Gordon Duncan Memorial Trust.
