Sponsorship & Award Feedback

The following feedback was received from those who received a sponsorship award from the Trust.  If you’re interested in sponsorship, please find out how to get funded.  Our sub-group carefully considers all submissions.

Coupar Angus Pipe Band

Before the onset of current restrictions, Coupar Angus Pipe Band had a very successful recruiting drive aimed at players of all levels. The outcome enabled us to plan on presenting two bands for the 2020 season, one in Grade 4 and the other in Novice Juvenile. A lot of training would be required, assisted significantly by the generous grant from the Trust.

Despite the frustrations of lockdown, the task has continued through 2020, mainly concentrating on the youngsters. Much of the piping instruction was organised internally, with the remainder and virtually all the drumming being conducted by external resources, funded by the Trust

Through the internet, the process continues into 2021. I am sure that all bands are experiencing the problems associated with non-contact training. However, we seek to continue the momentum until circumstances imrove.

Garnock Valley Pipes and Drums

Garnock Valley Pipes and Drums was established to give young people within the Garnock Valley cluster of schools the opportunity to learn the pipes and drums at not cost to them, ensuring inclusion of all. The tutors ‘toured’ schools in the Garnock Valley teaching young people from P5 upwards to play the pipes and drums. Prior to Covid there were over 100 young people learning the pipes and drums throughout the Garnock Valley. Due to their dedication and commitment, the band played in some major competitions in 2019 including the Worlds.

None of this would have been possible without the help and support from The Gordon Duncan Memorial Trust to whom we are extremely grateful.

Finn Macpherson

The Gordon Duncan Memorial Trust made an award to me in March 2020, just before the lockdown, and it covered all my travel costs for a number of months while I was moving back home to Skye from Glasgow to complete my HNC (Traditional music performance) online, which I’m very grateful for. Although the lockdown put a halt on live music I was able to purchase recording equipment, with help from the GDMT, so I could remotely collaborate with friends. With the GDMT funding I was able to pay for online tuition prior to my successful audition for the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s Undergraduate piping course in December 2020. I’m very grateful to be continuing on a musical path and I’m really looking forward to starting in September 2021.

Blackford Fiddle Group (Perthshire)

One of the biggest losses of the long Covid lockdown has been not being able to play music with the Fiddle Group. Enthusiasm for Zoom sessions began to drop and the ceilidh band was unable to practice until we found a way of playing online without the usual problem of sound latency. We now use a platform called JamKazam. The GDMT helped meet the cost of the audio equipment for the younger players and we now have weekly ceilidh band practices.

Here is what some of the band members have said:

  • “JamKazam has really encouraged me to continue playing during lockdown and to keep the ceilidh band together, practicing regularly and learning new tunes.”
  • “… it is great fun and really good practice for when we get back to playing in ceilidhs”
  • “ it’s a lifeline for live music, letting us develop as a ceilidh band”
  • “It’s been fantastic to be able to play with the ceilidh band again …. all playing together …. a great comfort being able to talk to the band in real time. Thank you to the Gordon Duncan Memorial Trust for this super opportunity.”
  • “It’s so much fun to be able to have a proper Ceilidh Band practice”
  • “The equipment is spectacular because it means that we can all play together at the same time- its feels like we are in the same room!”
  • “I have gained confidence and precision in my playing [from online sessions]”
  • “the audio kit purchased with funds generously donated by the Gordon Duncan Memorial Trust has been a complete game changer”

Our ceilidh band relies on young people passing on their experience and the tunes to the next generation. The virtual band practice sessions have brought back that continuity and have protected the long chain of experience which goes back 25 years in the group. None of us can wait to play live together again but for now this is a great substitute.

Kyle Warren

I am hugely grateful to the GDMT for their funding support.

Beyond the financial support awarded towards my project, there was real interest and encouragement from the trust in my desire to publish a second collection of bagpipe music. This gave me much confidence in the project, and a real boost to get stuck in to all that self-publishing a tune book entails.

I am pleased to say my book, EAT SLEEP PIPE REPEAT has been very well received since its launch. I hope in the years to come many tunes from the book will have found their way into pipers and musicians hands, further adding to the array of Scottish music, both traditional and modern, that so many people enjoy.

For all the fantastic work the trust does, in the name of such an influential figure to the whole Scottish music scene and beyond, I hope my project did the trust’s fantastic work justice.

Thank you everyone at the GDMT!
