This concert sees the debut of the Celtic big band, The Gordon Duncan Experience, directed by Corrina Hewat and Dave Milligan. The band provides a wonderful opportunity for young Perthshire musicians to perform in a large group setting and will play newly commissioned pieces as well as some of Gordon’s own tunes.

Horsecross and The Gordon Duncan Memorial Trust are delighted to announce the launch of The Gordon Duncan Experience, a three year project creating a new big band rooted in traditional music for Perthshire young people and we are now casting the net as wide as possible for potential members. The band is open to residents of Perthshire aged 14-18 who are intermediate to advanced players on any instrument.

Potential applicants or teachers, tutors or parents who might know someone who’d be interested can download the application form and info sheet.
Please note the closing date is Wed 10th March.

Gordon Duncan’s Tunes

There has always been a tremendous interest in the original music of Gordon Duncan. His stunning compositions have featured in his own ground-breaking recordings and studio sessions, in his work with top Scottish traditional music bands, and in the medleys of many top-grade pipe bands, especially those of which he was a member. Gordon’s tunes have “crossed over” into many other traditional instruments, such as the fiddle and accordion.

Now, Gordon’s excellent compositions are available in this new collection, compiled and produced by his brother, Ian Duncan.

A National Treasure III

A National Treasure III once more brings musicians together from all over Scotland and well beyond to honour Gordon’s massive influence and to raise funds for the Trust set up in his name.

This year’s house band is the brilliant young Treacherous Orchestra, with four of their members – fiddlers Innes Watson and Adam Sutherland, bassist Duncan Lyall and flute/whistles player Kevin O’Neill – premiering specially commissioned “Tunes For Gordon”.

We’re immensely pleased to welcome two of Scotland’s greatest ever traditional singers as our special guests – Karen Matheson of Capercaillie and Perthshire’s own Andy M Stewart, of Silly Wizard fame.

The superb Vale Of Atholl Pipe Band join us for the first time and the rest of the piping lineup comprises the incendiary Irish duo of John McSherry and Francis McIlduff; the Galician Gordon Duncan, Edelmiro Fernandez and Gordon’s nephew Alex Duncan.

Andrew Carlisle of Northern Ireland won the second annual Gordon Duncan Memorial Invitational Solo Piping Competition, held before a large crowd at the Central Hotel as part of the Celtic Connections festival. Carlisle had the most overall points across the Irish, Scottish and Breton events.
